We hope, too, that it will inspire and motivate you to work for the renewal of authentic beauty in sacred music-whether you’re a working church musician or an average Catholic in the pews wondering what’s going on. We aim for our podcast to be thoughtful, encouraging, and informative. We’ll introduce you to Catholics who love their faith and, through sacred music, offer all their efforts for his glory and the sanctification of all who hear them. We’ll ask questions about how really great music programs are doing their work. We’ll talk to people who found a home in the Catholic Church because they heard the call of Christ in the Church’s sacred music. We’ll interview bishops, priests, music directors, composers, teachers, philosophers, and theologians. Our topics range from discussion of Church documents on sacred music, to the music of certain composers or eras, Gregorian chant, the role of music in Catholic education, and techniques for directing a better choir rehearsal. We address topics of interest both to priests and liturgical musicians, as well as a general audience of Catholics interested in learning more about the Catholic Church’s teachings and treasury of sacred music. Welcome to Square Notes: The Sacred Music Podcast with your host Dr. You’ve got questions about sacred music? Here’s your chance to learn what the Church teaches and envisions for music in the sacred liturgy. Through the concord of text and melody the singer encounters a veritable musical catechism that recalls salvation history and leads one more deeply into the rhythms and mysteries of the Churchs year. and the texts of the Proper of Saints recall the great miracles and deeds of the saints in a memorable way. The texts of the Proper of Time are concise and poetic presentations of the mysteries of the faith. The melodies range in character from mere recitation tones elaborated with only a few notes to sustained cries of jubilation. The Dominican hymn repertoire is particularly remarkable for its sophisticated arrangement of melodies based on the rank of a feast, as well as for preserving the traditional texts of the hymns even after the promulgation of neo-classical versions in the seventeenth century. Through the diligent revisions of the Dominican liturgy that took place in the mid-thirteenth century under the direction of Humbert of Romans, the Order developed a selection of hymns that was used continuously from the time of Humbert through the twentieth century, unchanged but for the addition of hymns for new feasts. One element of the early Dominican liturgy that was cultivated with great care was the repertoire of Latin hymnody sung at the various hours of the Divine Office. Dominic, who is well known for having sung hymns such as the Ave maris stella and the Veni creator as he walked throughout Europe, passed on to the Order of Preachers his love of singing the liturgy. The Hymnarium ‘s introduction explains this rich history: Dominic himself, but it received a stable and decisive direction by Humbert of Romans, the fifth Master of the Order of Preachers. The Dominican chant tradition, a distinctive thread of the Gregorian chant tradition, remains unknown to many. (Benefactors who contribute $25 or more to the completion of the project can opt to receive a complimentary copy of the Hymnarium once it is published). Joseph is now it its final stages of preparation and is only in need of a modest sum of funding to bring the project to completion. The hymnal to be published by the Liturgical Commission of the Dominican Province of St. For those interested in sacred music and the recovery of the Gregorian Chant tradition, the Dominican Hymna rium is indeed an exciting milestone. After many years of comparing manuscripts, compiling chants, and refining translations, the treasures of the Dominican chant tradition have at last been compiled into an impressive new hymnal for the Divine Office, the traditional prayer of chanted psalms, which sanctifies the hours of the day.

We realized it’s not us who need service. “We were super wiped,” the Bay Area technologist told me. Tess Rinearson had finished a 17-mile hike to the top of Mount Tamalpais with her boyfriend and some friends, only to return to a Zipcar that would not start. Zipcars abandoned for days Zipcars stuck in the woods Zipcars stuck on the seashore Zipcars stuck in garages Zipcar users resorting to hitchhiking. Such issues might be rare-Prus declined to give any hard numbers to quantify how rare-but online, tales of the dreaded “out-of-comms scenario” abound. That last scenario was the one my family and I found ourselves in, though we did not know it at the time. Still, cars without reception become vulnerable in a few scenarios: when members lose or do not have their physical Zipcard with them, when they exceed their reservation time or want to extend their Zipcar reservation, or when the vehicle battery dies. Indeed, making sure that the cars work when out of reception is a “mission-critical success factor” for the company, he said. Zipcars in general work just fine when they do not have cell service, he said, as they have some internal memory that lets them function even when out of touch with the company servers. The “out-of-comms scenario when a member is unable to access a vehicle is extremely rare,” Jeff Prus, Zipcar’s vice president of product and experience, told me in an interview. Or getting locked out and marooned in Death Valley, perhaps with medicine trapped in the car. I shudder to think about limping back to a trailhead with no more water in my backpack, only to find a car that would not start. We needed another tow to a town where we at last abandoned the Zipcar and made our way home.Īnnie Lowrey: The next recession will destroy Millennials A tow truck took us to a lot with reception, where the rental failed to start. Unable to get a cab to come to us, we waited. We could abandon the car, they said, and they would waive the normal fee. We used a landline to call Zipcar, whose representatives told us about the reception issue. One morning, after waving the card over the reader what felt like a thousand times, we realized the thing was no longer working. I had gone to a remote part of the California coast with my brother, sister, husband, and baby, with our car and a Zipcar. Not too nightmarish of a nightmare, thankfully. It means turning your weekend of hiking and forest-bathing into a logistical nightmare. It means a multiday extraction operation requiring a flatbed tow truck. Sometimes it means you are stranded in the middle of nowhere, a fussy baby in one hand and a useless cellphone in the other. Sometimes that means you don’t get your cup of coffee, or you need to call a cab the old-fashioned way. But it also means that things can go very wrong. All this connection means easier access, faster service, cheaper prices, better features. The same is true for your Uber ride, or your cup of coffee made by a Wi-Fi–connected machine, or your Peloton workout. With services like Zipcar, your rental car becomes not just a car, but a node in a complex, connected system. It is a particularly vexing part of the give-and-take of attaching everything to everything. And because you will be in an area with no cell reception, it might be impossible for you to call for help. The doors won’t open, and even if they do, the engine will not start. Here is the Public Service Announcement part of the story: If you take a vehicle loaned out by Zipcar-a rental service where drivers use RFID cards or a mobile app to open up the car-to an area without cell reception, there’s a chance the car will not work. I held the card over the reader and tried to do the same. My brother and then my sister held the card over the reader and waited for it to unlock. In connection with this, the assumption in media and academic circles is that the statistics on incidents are doctored to show that things are constantly improving. The Government wanted to give the impression to both domestic and international audiences that its policies, such as the New Socialist Countryside and others initiatives meant to address social disparities, are working. A "disturbance of public order," however, is a legal term in China's criminal code that covers 37 offenses, including unsanctioned public assembly and obstruction of justice, among others. Nonetheless, a 2005 article on the website of the China Law Society (an official organization of Chinese legal scholars and professionals) argued that "mass incidents" have two main characteristics, namely 1) they involve large numbers of persons, from tens to hundreds and 2) about two-thirds of the incidents pit regular citizens against government authorities seen as failing to fulfill their official duties. The term "mass incident" has no legal definition. How security authorities differentiate a "disturbance of public order" from a "mass incident" remains unclear. In addition, an official Xinhua News Service report from 2005 pegged the number of "mass incidents" in 2003 at 60,000. The 87,000 "disturbances of public order" figure constituted an uptick over statistics leaked to outside sources in January 2005 indicating that the MPS tabulated some 74,000 "mass incidents" in 2004. The statements represented the first official reports in recent years of positive progress in reining in protests. The figure is confusing because in January of last year, the MPS stated that in 2005, there were some 87,000 "disturbances of public order" across the country by Chen's count, the number of "mass incidents" for 2005 would have been closer to 30,000. Also in January, Chen Xiwen, director of the Central Rural Work Leading Group, announced that the number of "mass incidents" nationwide fell by some 20 percent last year, to 23,000, adding that about half were in the countryside. At a press conference in January, MPS Vice Minister Liu Jinguo said the number of "mass incidents" in China declined by 16.5 percent in 2006. Releasing statistics about social disturbances has become a winter ritual of sorts for the Chinese Government. Reports and photographs of violent demonstrations in various places have given rise to analysis that “Beijing’s control over the coercive system, as well as that system’s capacity to maintain social control, appears to be slipping.” Since that assertion was published in 2001, Beijing has reinvigorated its coercive apparatus. Since the early 1990s, China has appeared precariously unstable various sources have noted mounting unrest - well over 100,000 “mass incidents” per year by 2001. The responsibilities and structure of public security agencies in China include: the prevention, suppression and investigations of criminal activities fight against terrorist activities maintenance of social security and order fight against behaviors jeopardizing social order control over traffic, fire and dangerous objects administration of household registration, identification cards, nationality, exit-and-entry, stay and travel of foreigners in China maintenance of border security protection of state assigned persons, venues and facilities management of gatherings, parades and demonstrations security inspection on public information networks supervision and instruction of security work in state organizations, mass organizations, enterprises and important construction sites and instruction of crime prevention work of community security commissions. According to press reports, State Council budget figures for 20 - even if not broken out by agency - show that the expenditures on internal security systems have outpaced the cost of China’s dramatic military modernization, coming in at $95 billion compared to $92 billion in 2010 and up to $111 billion for 2012. This makes these services not just part of a policy staff process but an integral tool for the preservation of the power of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). The distinction between intelligence and internal security policy is minimal, institutionally speaking. Language: English Words: 7,959 Chapters: 10/? If the shrooms are too large, it could complicate the process by having to prop each of the cakes up, so they don’t keep falling over.Īdditionally, depending on the climate conditions where you live, you may want to go with a more cold-tolerant or heat-tolerant strain.įor most people, the best strain is simply the one that sounds the most interesting to you. cakes, you should opt for a strain that doesn’t produce extremely large mushrooms. You can’t really go wrong when selecting a strain so go with whatever one’s sounds the most interesting to you. The core difference from one strain to another is the growth habits of the mushrooms themselves. The bottom line is that all strains are going to provide more or less the same experience. Your mindset going into the trip greatly impacts your qualitative experience from taking magic mushrooms - not the strain. The strain of mushroom you choose has little to no direct impact on the experience. Some are suggested to be more euphoric, more visually psychedelic, or more introspective. Lots of strain vendors will list certain qualitative effects with a given strain. All the strains listed below are active at roughly the same dose, and the qualitative effects are virtually identical. There’s a lot of debate surrounding whether psilocybin strains mean much of anything beyond the physical appearance of the mushroom.Īll magic mushroom strains contain three active ingredients - psilocybin, psilocin, and baeocystin. Why Strain Selection Isn’t As Important As You Might Think Some strains are more susceptible to mold and bacteria than others. Resistance to infection - contamination is the biggest cause of failure when growing magic mushrooms. Colonization speed - the colonization time will vary slightly, but some strains will fully colonize spawn jars up to 20% faster.Flush vitality - most strains will survive long enough for around 3 or 4 flushes, but some have the vitality to continue pushing out mushrooms for ten flushes or more.Gill production - some strains, like Penis Envy, barely produce any exposed gills at all.Cap color - the color of mushroom caps can range from white (albinos) to tan to dark brown or black.Mushroom size - some strains have a higher affinity for growing into monster mushrooms others are more likely to produce smaller, stubby mushrooms instead. There are six key differences that make strains unique: But all strains within this species can breed together.Ĭonversely, strains of Psilocybe cubensis can’t breed with strains of Panaeolus cyanescens because they’re genetically distinct from one another. Within the Psilocybe cubensis species, there are hundreds of different strains, each one with slight differences in how they grow. They’re considered a different race (strain) but can still reproduce because they’re the same species ( Homo sapiens). Let’s look at humans as an example: Someone of African descent (strain or race) can reproduce just as easily with someone of Caucasian descent. Strains within a species have the same genetic code, but some genes are more active than others - which produces slight differences in how they look or feel. In other words, all species are genetically distinct. Magic Mushroom Strain Guide (100+ Strains Explained)Ī species refers to a distinct genetic grouping of organisms that can reproduce together.Ī strain is a subgrouping that refers to a specific phenotype or morphology within a species.

They could be worn with your dressiest pieces or on a run outdoors. I highly recommend either of these styles as a gift for your favorite ladies because what woman doesn’t love a new pair of leggings? And in case you didn’t know-lululemon has the most beautiful gloves! I purchase a new pair every year and love these Tech and Toasty Knit gloves. I’m also a fan of the Align leggings which basically feel like butter. Great for workouts but also when you want your legs to look extra good! I’m wearing them here in black but I also have them in 3 other colors! My go-to legging as of late. It sucks you in but also has a smooth, cool feel that wicks away sweat. My favorite leggings from lululemon-the Wunder Under High Rise Tight (I like the 25” seam because I’m shorter – 5’4”) which is breathable and an almost seamless-like fit in their luxe fabric (which is a dream!). Most days you’ll find me running errands with the kids or working from home and all of these styles keep me cozy on days when I’m non stop after an early workout (or skipping the gym!). I’ve also added this sherpa half zip in grey and this mock neck long sleeve sweater. I’ve been living in lululemon’s cozy layers lately like this scuba pullover in the prettiest dusty rose color. Not only are they some of my most worn items (#momlife) but you can’t help but feel motivated for a new year with some fresh athletic gear. So much so that Dave started to take notice and wanted a few styles for himself! Truth be told, I always ask for a few pieces from lululemon for the holidays. Lately, I’ve been adding more of their athleisure pieces to my wardrobe and I’ve found myself reaching for their comfy layers every single day. It’s pretty much the only brand I wear for cardio and workouts with my trainer. It’s probably obvious that lululemon is my go-to for activewear. She even talked to my mom about religion! suppose we weren’t christian! Bottom line, you don’t talk religion or politics with strangers especially not customers! My mom also told me she had really bad pains from the massage which her masseuse explained she was «getting all the knots out» and continued with the torture. She told me how her masseuse talked her ears off during the massage. I wasn’t about to give the rest of my money to the casino so sue me if i have to wait for my mom while reading your December ’ 09 magazines. so i was a little miffed when the people at Contour kept asking me what i was waiting around in the lounge for. Now, the entire day, i had compared this experience to the very nice one i had at the Disney Grand Floridian spa (i know, those shoes are almost impossible to fill, but still!) At the Disney resort, i got a massage and was constantly encouraged to stay as long as i want and spend the rest of the day using the facilities. After my shower, i dried my hair and went to the lounge to have water and pretzels. i was also worried my dreadlocks would fall out - but i digress. i guess it was a little silly to worry whether or not washing my body with shampoo would make body hair grow insanely but I’m a worry wart like that. it felt amazing and i was totally relaxed but since the bottle marked ‘shampoo’ and the bottle marked ‘body wash’ had the same exact liquid in it, my relaxation went away. (the third shower was strictly for the handicapped) my masseuse had told me earlier that a shower after a massage would help me relax and she was right. good thing i was the only one in the locker room since there were only 3 showers. Went back to the first shower to grab the shampoo and went back to the second shower. i knew i still had awhile to wait for my mom so i went back to the locker room to take a shower and wash my hair. It felt so good that i felt myself getting a little sleepy and knew it was time to get out. (very good advice, that) i decided to unwind for a bit in the wet steam room… the best part of the whole day. After my 60 min., «she» took me around to the steam room and the sauna then left me with an encouragement about drinking lots of water for the rest of the day. and she did an okay job… SHE who never introduced herself. I know some women work right up until they get to the maternity ward but come on! she had one of those «any day now» stomachs and frankly, i was a little creeped out that i was gonna feel her stomach which she was massaging me. Some of the light fixtures in the place had that annoying Kmart blinky light thing, and the old magazines gracing the tables irked my nerves so i couldn’t wait to get out of there and get my pampering started. The bathrooms were like sardine cans and there’s nowhere to hang a purse, let alone clothes for changing. For the Hard Rock i expected it to be a lot better. While waiting i decided to check out the locker room. She took my mom and I waited for my lady to arrive. I mean violent whopping coughs that never seemed to end. Her allergies were acting up and she was hacking up a storm. My mom’s lady came first and with her she brought germs. Once off the elevator, another young lady showed us the locker room area where we changed into our robes and waited for our masseuses. And the website simply states: «A 20% service charge will be added upon check in.» But we’d been planning this outing for awhile and we definitely deserved it so we paid and took the elevator upstairs. That should have been a huge red flag for us especially since the woman i spoke to over the phone never explained this when we went over the prices the day before. What surprised us was the fact that the spa collects the money BEFOREHAND, PLUS they charge 20% for EACH service not the total price. A friendly young woman at the counter greeted us and gave us a review of the service we would be getting: Swedish massage for me and Swedish massage, mani/pedi, and facial for mom. The first floor is the lobby, designer sunglasses shop, and beachwear. A reliable family friend told us about a good experience she had here, however what one considers to be a good experience can be totally different to another. We wanted to go to a nice, relaxing place to get primped and pampered. My mom and I had been planning a spa day for months. As early as 1866, the Osages were forced to cede tracts at the eastern and northern edges of the reservation. After the Civil War ended, the Osage lands were coveted as the largest and last reserve of good land in the eastern part of the state. The reservation had been established in 1825. When Kansas was admitted to the Union as a state in 1861, the Osage Indian reservation occupied a large tract of land near the southern border. It was named in honor of Richard Montgomery, an American Revolutionary War general killed in 1775 while attempting to capture Quebec City, in Canada, after successfully capturing two forts and the city of Montreal. Montgomery County was established on February 26, 1867. In 1854, the Kansas Territory was organized, then in 1861 Kansas became the 34th U.S. In 1803, most of the land for modern day Kansas was acquired by the United States from France as part of the 828,000 square mile Louisiana Purchase for 2.83 cents per acre. In 1802, Spain returned most of the land to France, but keeping title to about 7,500 square miles. In 1762, after the French and Indian War, France secretly ceded New France to Spain, per the Treaty of Fontainebleau. From the 16th century to 18th century, the Kingdom of France claimed ownership of large parts of North America.
